Separation of professional and personal lives
We - eastern people - mix up our life at home with the work and that’s because we are too honest .. . we let our bad attitudes interfere with our professional service .. the service that we are suppose to offer at work to our client, to our organization .. . or to ourselves .
If you had a bad day, then you would not perform at the same level as usual .. You are a different person .. Why? Just because you didn’t leave your role of being a father, mother behind the door before you get into work .. one day we are too happy, just simply because we had great time the night before ... and some days we are mean to our internal and external customers, for someone else was mean to us.
Customer care and issue related to service being a western phenomenon does not enjoy a proper answer within the scope of eastern culture and life style .. . customer care says: serve your client no matter who s/he is .. in an ideal model age, wealth, race, education, religion, and appearance are unrelated and weightless factors in your decision and attitude towards customers.
Just imagine how unfeasible it is to draw a strict line and divide our career form our personality ... imagine that you are a taxi driver and you had a fight with your neighbor last night, now in the morning, are you going to brake for that nasty neighbor and harbor him in your cab? in your dreams ..
There are basically four possible answers to this concern:
1. mystical approach: you love people unconditionally and know that their bad behavior is just one of the few burdens you have to overcome to become more complete.. to become perfect ... perfect! you purify yourself by tolerating others... you see the whole picture: that all are from one holy source, so nothing and no one is wrong.
-> we leave this option for now, just because of one single reason: it is too impractical. The more you think like that, the less you would be working in service industry, actually you don’t need approach, you are right in there.
2. eastern melange strategy: to blend what you feel and sense with your guideline to serve a person (try to avoid but the correct terminology for that person is customer), trust your perception and judge people by their characteristics.
-> this is what we mostly do right now, frankly saying its rooted in our honesty and sincerity. we cannot cheat ourselves and close our eyes to our impression. we only have to know that our feeling are dull after living for so long among adults, we heard lies, we are not honest to others ourselves, so it is quite possible that we have a misconception about people ... and we usually do.
3. robotic instruction oriented method: I don’t feel writing about this trivial option, as no one ever can follow this pattern. It is here because it’s one of the options, impossible option though!
4. mainstream practice in western societies: follow the instruction, TRY to not let your judgment be impaired by your feeling, your taste and your belief system.
Why did I tell you all these? Did I have a bad experience when I was served? didnt I have anything better to write here? am I starting to blame my fanatic eastern sympathy? am I preparing the valid/invalid (doesn’t matter) grounds for myself to leave?
Maybe all .. Maybe none ..
